Ladin cuisine

Every meal at our hotel serving Ladin cuisine is a voyage of discovery of the region’s tradition and culture. Each dish tells a tale of feast and famine, and of the lifestyle and artistic flair of the women in Val Badia/Gadertal. Just a few types of vegetable, limited dairy products, corn flour, barley and broad beans were often the only ingredients available in these far-flung valleys. Go on holiday to San Martin and try the tasty wholesome treats, which are often fried, for yourself. These delicious goodies have been made using locally sourced ingredients for centuries. Our hotel’s head chef certainly plays with the local Ladin cuisine to strike a balance between long-established tradition and open-minded innovation.

Cajenci

A few typical Ladin dishes

Tutres” are tasty fried dough pockets filled with either spinach, sauerkraut or poppy seeds. They are usually served with a barley soup. “Schlutzkrapfen” is another dish: mezzelune stuffed with spinach. The fried versions are called “Cajencí arstîs”, a must-try dish on your holiday to San Martin. Other firm favourites include “Gnoch da zigher” (gnocchi with goat’s cheese) and “Bales da cioce” (ham dumplings). Those with a sweet tooth will love “Crafuns mori” (lingonberry jam doughnuts), “Furtaies” (funnel cakes) and “Cütles da pom” (apple pastries).

  • Personal touch
I had the most amazing stay. The owner went out of her way to provide service above and beyond. Made breakfast at 4:30 am so I could make the start of my cycle Gran Fondo. The room was beautiful and cleaned daily and the meals were sumptuous. Staff were exceptional. I recommend this hotel.

  • “Jewel of a Hotel”
We have stayed at this family-run hotel twice while skiing over New Year's week, and both times were absolutely wonderful. The rooms are spotlessly clean, and they are able to offer family-sized, 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suites that work well for us, especially with all of our skiing paraphernalia. The Prousch family and their employees work very hard to make sure their customers feel like guests. In the course of a week, you get to know other guests, many of whom return year after year, for good reason. The new bar area reminds me of staying at a lodge or retreat, with families playing games, doing puzzles and chatting in the evening hours between skiing and dinner. My daughter loved the kids' area and made new friends (German and Italian are the languages in the kids' "club"). Breakfast and dinner are consistently excellent, with new culinary experiences each trip. The view of the Dolomites from the hotel is absolutely incredible...

Stayed here in January 2012 for avalanche training in mountains and skiing for fun. Convenient to ski areas and Dolomiten hiking trails. Hotel and rooms are spotlessly clean. Food is excellent, but most importantly the Prausch family makes you feel at home and have excellent hospitality. Very nice people. The area is peaceful and special. Daily shuttles to the ski areas are complimentary. I will visit them again and highly recommend this hotel for family vacation or a ski vacation.
