Plan de Corones Skitour
of Ladin legends

Knights and princesses
San Vigilio in Marebbe is the ideal starting
point for a tour in the realm of the Ladin
stories and fables. By following in the
footsteps of the traditional story tellers
you'll discover something new. Franz
Wilhelm de Brach, 'Gran Bracun' as he
was called by the Ladins, lived here
hundreds of years ago...
a personality cloaked in mystery. The skiing day begins on the trail of the Gran Bracun with a lovely view of Piz de Plaies and a run to La Para hut, where you can find out more about the adventures of the dragon slayer. Once fortified and one more good story richer, off you go to the Kronplatz, the very spot where the Princess Dolasila was crowned. The mysterious kingdom of Fanes is rich with countless tales about her, among others. Dolasila was said to wear a sable fur and her silver arrow found every target. So the princess was not only beautiful, but also unbeatable !

Skitours Plan de CoronesAnd one more wonder
The panoramic view from Plan de Corones will take your breath away and you'll be able to see many famous Dolomite peaks right across as far as the imposing Tofana. The 'Concordia 2001' stands impressively on the plateau, the largest Tyrolean clock and a monument to freedom. The tour continues towards the valley to the Graziani rifugio, where you can round off the exciting story of Dolasila with a culinary treat: 'Crafuns Mori' - the Dolasila speciality -which are doughnuts laced with tasty wild ragout. On you go in the direction of the Furkel Pass through a little wood to a further key venue for skiing enthusiasts through the ages, the Bivouac hut. In 1636 the inhabitants of plague ridden Welsberg made a pilgrimage over the pass to Gnadenmutter to the parish of Marebbe and were subsequently freed from the epidemic. A monument on the way records the event. With the trip into the valley this action-packed storytelling skiing day draws to an end.

Tip:

The parish church of San Vigilio in Marebbe counts among the most beautiful Baroque churches in the whole region. It dates back to 1782 as a complete Rococo work of art in its own right, with playful looking fashioned towers, decorated facade and richly bedecked interior. The frescos of the domes are particularly impressive. The artist was Matthäus Günther and the works of art depict, among others, the stoning of the holy Vigilius. [Dolomiti Superski.com]

Sellaronda - the ski circuit around the Sella massive
4 Dolomites' passes, 4 Ladin valleys, 3 districts

The Sella Ronda is a merry-go-round for skiers, the only one of its kind, a series of ski-lifts and downhill runs, all linked to one another and set against a background of woods, rocky peaks and expanses of snow that is no exaggeration to call extraordinary.

Joining the skiing circuit is easy: just follow the roads that take you to one of the four villages around the Sella mountain (Corvara, Canazei, Arabba, Selva). The length of the circuit, including both, ski-lifts and ski runs, is a little less than 40 km and it is an easy route to ski along. But, because it is high up in the mountains, you need to check the weather forecast in order to avoid running into snowfalls or high winds which can turn what is supposed to be an enjoyable day out into an unpleasant and risky enterprise, with the danger of getting stranded.

Any skier interested in doing the Sella Ronda must be fit, even if the runs themselves are of middling difficulty rather than advances.

The time spent on ski-lifts is about two hours altogether, without counting the time spent queuing for them or having a break in one of the many refuges dotted along the circuit.

Total length of the tour
: 40 km
Ski slopes: 26 km
Time spent on the lifts: approx. 2 hours, please note that there can be some waiting time
Time spent for the descents: approx. 1.5 hours, depending on the capacity of the skier
Skipass: Dolomiti Superski

Suggestions:

  • You are advised to start the circuit no later than 10.00 in the morning.
  • You must reach the last pass by 15.30 otherwise you will miss the last ski-lifts; they close between 16.00 and 16.30.

Santa Croce

Among the classic panoramic - gastronomic ski

the slopes are always in excellent condition. The

the nature and culture of our valley.

The Santa Croce ski tour is a winning union of

Ski tour of the nature reserves

Ski tour of the nature reservesNature and culture
This tour follows an unbroken path through the cultural landscape of Alta Badia, within the confines of the Puez-Odle and Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Parks. From Colfosco you swing over in the cabin car into the Val Stella Alpina, beginning the day on Col Pradat and Forcelles, unique panoramic viewing points on the edge of the Puez high plain. The tour moves further on to Corvara and up on to the skiing arena around Col Alto, Piz Sorega and Piz La Villa. You'll see marvellous skiing slopes far into the distance ! Going over one of them towards La Villa and onwards to Gardenezza, you'll have the mighty peak of the Sassongher in view. The Ladin 'viles', typical hamlets made out of stone and larch wood with their combination of brooks and baking ovens are still to be found here. Some of these farmsteads can be seen on the way over Pedraces and San Leonardo up to Santa Croce, the high point of the tour.

Churches and cuisine
Although it is not the easiest task in the world to reconcile earthly pleasures with those of a more spiritual nature we can but try! The church of Santa Croce, a sanctuary of worship and great tradition throughout the ages, can be reached from either Pedraces or San Leonardo . A meditative stop to share the experience of many pilgrims before us and then we can move on to the joys of the palate! At the nearby Santa Croce rifugio you can enjoy the Ladin specialities - polenta, cheeses, speck, a special barley soup known as 'panicia'. At the end of a long day you can find out how the Gran Bracun, the renowned knight, once fought and defeated the dragon of Santa Croce as you enjoy a good glass of wine to finish off the perfect day.
